Aphex Twin - Music From The Merch Desk (2016-2023) (2024)

Exactly a year ago, with no prior announcement, Richard James, as Aphex Twin, released 'Music From The Merch Desk (2016–2023)' through Warp Records, where it was made available to listen through various streaming services. It was a compilation of 38 tracks released only on vinyl at his concerts, and the album's artwork came from a bootleg T-shirt, which was later resold as official merchandise. The first release that would make up 'Music From The Merch Desk' came from an Aphex Twin concert at Day For Night in Houston, where he performed on 17 December 2016. A 12-inch vinyl record with white artwork, Aphex Twin and Warp Records logos, and the text 'Houston, TX 12.17.16', was sold as merchandise at the concert. The record had two tracks, and while originally untitled, they were later named as 'no stillson 6 cirk' and 'no stillson 6 cirk mix2'. On 3 June 2017 James headlined at Field Day 2017, and another 12-inch vinyl record was sold at the concert, which came in a green unmarked sleeve in an Aphex Twin branded bag, and it contained 11 tracks. The record had sold out by 2pm. An official webstore that hosted James' music was opened on 20 July 2017, and in addition to releasing 'London 03.06.17' and other bonus tracks from the release, a digital 4-track EP titled 'Orphans' was made available. In 2019 James was announced to be performing at Printworks on 14 September, and another vinyl record was sold at the concert, containing songs from 'Orphans' and a new track titled 'Soundlab20', and when he later performed at The Warehouse Project a week later, a four-track vinyl record was made available as merchandise. On 16 June 2023, James performed during the Sónar festival in Barcelona, and a 10-inch vinyl record with two tracks was released at the festival, containing 'rfc pt8' and 'afxfm e'. Finally, on 19 September, he performed at 2023's Field Day festival, and a limited five-track 12-inch in a pink record sleeve was sold as merchandise. As 'Music From The Merch Desk' sneaked out with little publicity, and was only available to stream, it might have been missed by fans, and so here it is to fill that gap in your collection.

Aphex Twin - Analogue Bubblebath 5 (1995)

'Analogue Bubblebath 5' was recorded in 1995, and had been intended to be released on Richard James' own Rephlex Records label, under his alias AFX, as the fifth installment in his 'Analogue Bubblebath' series. The EP would have consisted of nine tracks, in alternating acid house/techno and ambient styles, but James decided that it was not up to par with the others in the series, so only a handful of vinyl test pressings were made. In January 2005 Rephlex mailed out black vinyl/binder editions of 'Analord 10', but due to problems at the manufacturing/mail out stage, approximately 20 buyers did not receive their package. Rephlex mailed out a second batch in June 2005 to those who had not received their order, and this second batch included a free copy of 'Analogue Bubblebath 5', although this distribution was never officially announced. No information is printed on the record's blank white labels (although some copies do have 'AB5' written and circled onto them), but the identifying call number of 'CAT 034' has been etched into its run-out grooves. There are no plans of a commercial release for the album, but with 20 copies out there, it wasn't long before bootleg CDR's started to appear, so we can hear for ourselves if it really is sub-par compared to the first four volumes. Only one of the tracks has a title, which is 'Cuckoo'.

Aphex Twin - The Joyrex Tape (1994)

It's been a while since I posted any weird electronic stuff, so here's another unreleased album from Aphex Twin. 'The Joyrex Tape' is the name given to a collection of unreleased tracks from the early 1990's recorded by Richard D. James. The original tape was copied from one of James' DATs sometime in the 1990's and was leaked onto the internet in 2011 after it was reportedly found during a house party. James had apparently passed out, and one of the guests went into his room and made a copy of one of his DATs. Since it was hastily copied, the sound quality is poor and it plays at the wrong speed, and subsequent copying has further degraded the clarity. The existence of the tape was rumored for some time until the We Are The Music Makers forum administrator Joyrex put up short snippets of the tracks, explaining the origins of the tape and his eventual possession of a copy. Contrary to common belief, Joyrex did not leak the tracks online even though his name has become it's title, but it's referred to as The Joyrex Tape since it was he who verified its existence with his audio samples, and via his communication with Richard D. James at the time. Tracks 1–6, 8-9, 13, and 14 were uploaded to SoundCloud in early 2015 by James himself, while track 7 is a demo version of 'Praze-An-Beeble Mix', which was subsequently released on the Ventolin EP. As I downloaded the entire SoundCloud dump in 2015, I'm able to use those versions of the tracks that I could locate, although couldn't find tracks 6 or 13. I've also speed-corrected and EQ'd the others so that they all play at a speed nearer to the SoundCloud versions, and hopefully in a clearer sound quality.

The Joyrex Tape doesn't include track titles, so the ones above are taken from the SoundCloud uploads.

Aphex Twin - Melodies From Mars (1995)

'Melodies From Mars' is a collection of unreleased tracks by Richard David James, better known as Aphex Twin, which was put together in 1995 and was leaked online a few years later. Although James did not admit authorship until 2014, fans have always suspected that he was behind it, as at least two of its tracks - 'Fingerbib' and  'Logan Rock Witch' - are demos of tracks featured on the subsequently released 'Richard D. James Album' in 1996. It's commonly believed that 'Melodies From Mars' was given to some of James' friends on cassette tapes, and an alternate version was illegally released in Russia by Unreal Records a few years ago, but no-one really knows who was behind the leak. James also said in an interview in 2010 that he'd redone the album in 2007, but it still remains unreleased.

Track listing

01 Mr. Flumpy
02 Fingerbib

06 Steam Funk
07 Tot's Dance
08 Logan Rock Witch
09 Crater Dub
10 Mr. Flumpy's Dog
11 There's No Martians
12 Crantock

Apart from 'Fingerbib' and 'Logan Rock Witch' all the tracks have been titled by fans, based on what they think they sound like. The actual titles for all the tracks is 'Untitled'.

If there are any Aphex Twin fans out there who want to hear more unreleased stuff, then I downloaded all 173 tracks that he uploaded to Soundcloud three years ago, and have them all saved in six folders of around 25 tracks each. They are only 192 bitrate as they were a Soundcloud download, but if anyone wants me to post them then just leave a comment.
