Harvey Mandel - ...and on guitar (2014)

Harvey Mandel was born on 11 March 1945 in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in Morton Grove, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He began playing guitar while in his early teens and found his inspiration in the sound of the Ventures, but once he had the chance to hear musicians like Buddy Guy in the small blues clubs of Chicago's West and South sides a whole new world of music opened up to him. He learned from and performed with such greats as Guy, Albert King, Muddy Waters, and Otis Rush, and he got his nickname "The Snake" from master blues harp player Charlie Musselwhite, who admired the way Mandel's left hand would effortlessly snake up and down the guitar neck. His solo career began in the late '60s, after he was signed to Philips Records, a label distributed by Mercury Records, and his first album was 1968's 'Cristo Redentor', which was well-received on the then-growing underground radio scene in California. He followed this with 'Righteous' in 1969 and 'Games Guitars Play' in 1970, before moving to the Janus Records label. On the night that Henry Vestine quit Canned Heat in July 1969, Mandel was in the band's dressing room at the Fillmore West, and both he and Mike Bloomfield joined them to help out on their two sets. Following this, both Bloomfield and Mandel were offered Vestine's spot in the band, and Mandel accepted, with his third performance with the band being the Woodstock Festival in 1969. He stayed with Canned Heat for a year, touring and recording material which appeared on three albums, and during this period, with Canned Heat bandmates Larry Taylor and Fito de la Parra, he also contributed to the 'Music From Free Creek' super session project. With Canned Heat bassist Larry Taylor, Mandel joined John Mayall's band for a couple of years, and after a brief tour with Mayall in Europe in 1972, he recorded 'The Snake', and then 'Shangrenade' in 1973 and 'Feel The Sound Of Harvey Mandel' in 1974, all of which were released on Janus Records. When Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor left the band in December 1974, Mandel was given an audition as his replacement, and although he didn't get the gig, he did record two tracks with the Stones for their 1976 album 'Black And Blue', providing the lead guitar solo on 'Hot Stuff'. Mandel's session work is a short who's-who of blues and roots-rock greats, including playing with The Rolling Stones, John Mayall, Charlie Musselwhite, Barry Goldberg, Jimmy Witherspoon, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Dewey Terry, Freddy Roulette, Bobby Keys, and eventually, even his heroes the Ventures. In the early '90s, Mandel moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he recorded a series of excellent albums for the Chicago-based Western Front Entertainment label, as well as permanently rejoining Canned Heat in 2010. He continues to write and record to this day, sometimes in collaboration with his son Eric Mandel as lead vocalist, and if you need proof that he's lost none of his skill in recent years then just listen to his work on 'Wasabi' from 1996.

Frank Zappa - ...and on guitar (1978)

Frank Vincent Zappa was born on 21 December 21 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland, and was often sick as a child, suffering from asthma, earaches and sinus problems. A doctor treated his sinusitis by inserting a pellet of radium into each of his nostrils, as at the time little was known about the potential dangers of even small amounts of therapeutic radiation, and that might explain why nasal imagery and references appear in his music and lyrics, as well as in the collage album covers created by his long-time collaborator Cal Schenkel. Zappa joined his first band at Mission Bay High School in San Diego as the drummer, and he was interested in sounds for their own sake, particularly the sounds of drums and other percussion instruments. At Antelope Valley High School, Zappa met Don Glen Vliet (who later changed his name to Don Van Vliet and adopted the stage name Captain Beefheart), and he played drums in local band the Blackouts, but he also started to develop an interest in the guitar, and in 1957 he was given his first instrument. Zappa's interest in composing and arranging flourished in his last high-school years, and by his final year he was writing, arranging and conducting avant-garde performance pieces for the school orchestra, and after he left high school he attempted to earn a living as a musician and composer. During the early 1960's, Zappa wrote and produced songs for other local artists, and in 1964 he moved into the Pal studio and began routinely working 12 hours or more per day recording and experimenting with overdubbing and audio tape manipulation. Aided by his income from film composing, Zappa took over the studio from Paul Buff, and renamed it Studio Z, although it was rarely booked for recordings by other musicians, and following a brief prison sentence for recording alleged pornographic mateiral there, he could no longer afford to pay the rent on the studio and was evicted, with the building being torm down in 1966. That was also the year that Zappa formed The Mothers, and recorded the classic 'Freak Out' album, which was to put him on the path to being one of the most influential musicians in the world. In July of that year he was asked to produce some tracks for The Animals, one of which was his own composition 'All Night Long'. The following year he played guitar on both sides of a 7" single by Tommy Flanders, and on the A-side of Barry Goldberg's 'Carry On' single. 
During the late 1960's, Zappa continued to develop the business sides of his career, and he and Herb Cohen formed the Bizarre Records and Straight Records labels, distributed by Warner Bros. Records, releasing albums by Alice Cooper, The Persuasions, and Wild Man Fischer, on whose record he also played guitar. In 1970 Zappa helped out former band-mate Jeff Simmons by producing and playing on his first proper solo album (following a collaborative film soundtrack with Randy Sterling), and the same year he composed the music for Jean-Luc Ponty's 'King Kong' album, as well as playing on the record, and afterwards asked the violinist to join The Mothers Of Invention as a permanent member. In 1971 he and the Mothers were part of John Lennon's live performance at the Fillmore East in New York City on 6 June 1971, which was taped and released the following year on John Lennon & Yoko Ono's 'Some Time In New York City' album. In 1968 The Mothers Of Invention had released a pastiche of 50's doo-wop music under the title of 'Cruising With Reuben & The Jet's', and four years later a Los Angeles band named themselves after the album, producing two records of their own, the first of which was produced by Zappa, as well on him contributing one song to it, and playing guitar on another. In 1974 he helped out former Mothers' keyboardist George Duke on his own album 'Feel', and in 1976 he managed to reform Grand Funk Railroad, who had just broken up, by telling then that he wanted to produce them, which he did on their 'Good Singin', Good Playin'' album, on which he played guitar on one track. In 1976 Zappa was in Montreal for a concert, and was asked by Robert Charlebois to participate in the recording of a track on his new album. Zappa accepted and showed up the next day in a Montreal Studio to record the solo on 'Petroleum', not only playing the end solo, but also participating in the arrangements, but then  Charlebois sat on the tapes for over a year before the album eventually appeared in 1977. After Grand Funk Railroad  broke up in 1976, band members Don Brewer, Mel Schacher, and Craig Frost formed the group Flint and released their self titled album in 1978, and because of his connection with the members from their 'Good Singin', Good Playin'' album, Zappa offered to play guitar on a couple of tracks. Obviously this is a very concise biography of Frank Vincent Zappa, just concentrating on his collaborations with other artists, but he has lived the most fascinating life, and the 'radium up the nose' story is fairly typical of the sort of thing that happened to him, so do check out his Wikipedia page while you are listening to this diverse collection of music that he's been involved with throughout the 60's and 70's.

Mike Bloomfield - ...and on guitar (1977)

Michael Bernard Bloomfield was born into a wealthy Chicago Jewish-American family in 1943, a part of the family that ran Bloomfield Industries, formed by his grandfather Samuel Bloomfield. When he was twelve his family moved to suburban Glencoe, Illinois, where he attended New Trier High School for two years. During this time, he began playing in local bands, putting together The Hurricanes, which later led to his expulsion after his band performed a raucous rock and roll song at a 1959 school gathering. In 1957 Bloomfield had attended a Chicago performance by blues singer Josh White, and began spending time in Chicago's South Side blues clubs, playing guitar with such bluesmen as Sleepy John Estes, Yank Rachell, and Little Brother Montgomery, and by the early 60's he'd played with Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and many other Chicago blues performers. At this time he met musicians who would later become part of his professional life, such as harmonica player and singer Paul Butterfield, guitarist Elvin Bishop, fellow Chicagoan Nick Gravenites, and Bronx-born record producer Norman Dayron. With help from his friend Joel Harlib, a Chicago photographer who became Bloomfield's de facto manager, they took an audition tape by Bloomfield to Columbia producer and talent scout John Hammond in 1964, and he was signed to Columbia's Epic Records label. He recorded a few sessions for Columbia in 1964 that remained unreleased until after his death, and in early 1965 he joined the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, which included Elvin Bishop and keyboardist Mark Naftalin, along with drummer Sam Lay and bassist Jerome Arnold, and their debut album 'The Paul Butterfield Blues Band' was recorded in September and released the following month. In June 1965, Bloomfield had recorded with Bob Dylan, whom he had met in 1963 at a Chicago club called the Bear, adding his chiming Telecaster guitar licks to 'Like A Rolling Stone', and he also played on most of the tracks on Dylan's 1965 'Highway 61 Revisited' album. After Sam Lay fell ill after a series of dates in November 1965, the Butterfield Band brought Chicago-born drummer Billy Davenport into the group, and this line-up recorded the ground-breaking 'East-West', with the title track exploring modal music, being based on a song Gravenites and Bloomfield had been playing since 1965 called 'It's About Time'. 
Bloomfield played on a number of recording sessions between 1965 and 1967, and his guitar playing had a huge impact on San Francisco Bay Area musicians after he played with the Butterfield band at Bill Graham’s Fillmore West. Eventually Bloomfield tired of the Butterfield Band's rigorous touring schedule and, relocating to San Francisco, he sought to create his own group and he formed the short-lived Electric Flag in 1967, with two longtime Chicago collaborators, Barry Goldberg and vocalist Nick Gravenites. The band featured a horn section, and the rhythm section was composed of bassist Harvey Brooks and drummer Buddy Miles, and the first recordings were for the soundtrack of director-producer Roger Corman's 1967 movie 'The Trip'. Their first proper studio album 'A Long Time Comin'' was issued in April 1968, and critics complimented the group's distinctive, intriguing sound but found the record itself somewhat uneven. By that time, however, the band was already disintegrating, and shortly after the release of the album Bloomfield left his own band, with Gravenites, Goldberg, and bassist Harvey Brooks following. He next teamed up with keyboardist Al Kooper, who had also played on 'Like A Rolling Stone', and after playing together on Moby Grape's 1968 'Grape Jam' album, they decided to record an entire jam album, with the result being the classic 'Supersession' album, with Bloomfield, Kooper, and Stephen Stills, Barry Goldberg, Harvey Brooks, and Eddie Hoh. Bloomfield continued with solo, session and back-up work from 1968 to 1980, playing on Mother Earth's cover of Memphis Slim's 'Mother Earth', and producing the 1968 sessions for James Cotton's 1968 album 'Cotton In Your Ears'. He released his first solo album 'It's Not Killing Me' in 1969, and the same year he helped Janis Joplin assemble her Kozmic Blues Band for the album 'I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues, Again Mama!', playing the guitar solo on Joplin's blues composition 'One Good Man'. He also reunited with Paul Butterfield and Sam Lay for the Chess Records album 'Fathers And Sons', featuring Muddy Waters and pianist Otis Spann. 
During 1970 Bloomfield gave up playing because of his heroin addiction, and it wasn't until 1973 that he recorded his second solo album 'Try It Before You Buy It', which was rejected by Columbia, and didn't appear until 1990. Also in 1973, he cut 'Triumvirate' with Dr. John and guitarist and singer John Hammond Jr, and the next year he was back with The Electric Flag for their 'The Band Kept Playing' album. In 1975 he recorded an album with the group KGB with singer and songwriter Ray Kennedy, and Barry Goldberg, with the band name coming from their initials, but it was not well received by critics, and Bloomfield left soon after its release. The same year found him performing with John Cale on Cale's soundtrack for the film 'Caged Heat', and in 1976 he recorded an instructional album for guitarists, 'If You Love These Blues, Play 'Em As You Please', which was financed through Guitar Player magazine. In 1977, Bloomfield was selected by Andy Warhol to do the soundtrack for the pop artist's last film, 'Andy Warhol's Bad'(also known as 'BAD'), and an unreleased single 'Andy's Bad' was produced for the project. During 1979-1981 he often performed with the King Perkoff Band, sometimes introducing them as the 'Michael Bloomfield And Friends' outfit, and he continued to play live dates, with his performance at San Francisco State College on 7th February 1981, being his final appearance. Bloomfield died in San Francisco on 15th February 1981, at the age of just 37, found seated behind the wheel of his car, with all four doors locked. According to police, an empty Valium bottle was found on the car seat, but no suicide note was found, and the medical examiner who performed the autopsy ruled the death accidental. In his short life he became known as the epitome of the white bluesman, with his searing guitar gracing a multitude of songs from the early 60's right up until a few years before his death.

Duane Allman - ...and on guitar (1971)

Before Duane Allman became a guitar hero in the Allman Brothers Band, he was a hotshot session guitarist who was logging tons of studio time with some of the best R&B singers in the world. After the Allman Brothers started to be appreciated for their albums, Duane continued to record with other artists, most notably with Eric Clapton in Derek And The Dominos, until his death in 1971. Some of his best recordings were with artists like John Hammond, who was the son of the record-company exec who helped launch the careers of everyone from Billie Holiday to Bob Dylan, and from Aretha Franklin to Bruce Springsteen. Like his father, he loved rural acoustic blues music and built a cult career paying tribute to his heroes, attracting some famous fans, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Allman, who played on a couple of Hammond's albums. Clarence Carter was a blind R&B singer who hit the Top 10 with 'Patches' and 'Slip Away,' which Gregg Allman later covered, but on 'The Road Of Love' from 1969 he takes on soulful blues with some help from an eager horn section and Duane Allman's jagged guitar. Delaney & Bonnie had lots of famous friends and fans, including Clapton, Leon Russell and George Harrison, and their 'Livin' On The Open Road' is a bluesy R&B rocker with a positively piercing guitar solo provided by Allman. Boz Scaggs spent two years with the Steve Miller Band when he booked some time at the famous Muscle Shoals recording studio, working with its terrific in-house session group, and his eponymous 1969 album is filled with great music, including the superb 'Waiting For A Train'. Aretha Franklin's 'This Girl's In Love With You' includes some great covers, such as The Band's standard 'The Weight', as well as the soulful 'It Ain't Fair', and fellow soul-maestro Wilson Pickett also benefited from Allman's guitar prowess on his 'Hey Jude' album, most noticeably on the title track. Alongside these legendary US performers, he also played with a number of lesser-known artists, such as Johnny Jenkins, Eric Quincy Tate, Judy Mayhan, and Sam Samudio, as well as renowned bluesman Otis Rush, and Canadian rocker Ronnie Hawkins. Most of the songs on here were included on the extensive 2013 'Skydog' album, but they were scattered throughout the seven discs, and included multiple tracks from some artists, and so I've extracted what I consider to be the best of them from the years 1969 to 1971. So that this is not just a rip-off of that record, I've managed to track down one additional song that wasn't on 'Skydog', from Judy Mayhan, and I've only selected the recordings where you can really hear the contribution that Allman is making to the music, thereby condensing the 7CD set into one concise 55-minute album.
