From their very first album, 1962's 'Surfin' Safari', The Beach Boys have included instrumental tracks on their records, and some of them are as good as the songs themselves. Early recordings were very much in the Shadows/Ventures style of rhythmic guitar-led pieces, but it wasn't long before they were coming up with lushly orchestrated tracks like 'Summer Means New Love', which fore-shadowed the classic 'Pet Sounds' title track. Many of these instrumentals were gathered together for a Japanese-only CD back in 1994, but that missed off some of the later tracks, and also included some below-par recordings just for the sake of it, so this post tidies up that release to include just the best of them, and I hope that it serves as a small tribute to Brian Wilson, following his sad passing a couple of weeks ago.
